About Preston Branch
The Preston Branch of Cats Protection is part of a
national organization founded in 1927, the oldest and
largest national charity devoted solely to the welfare
of cats. Cats Protection celebrates its 75th anniversary
in 2002. The Preston Branch was set up in 1984 and operates
mostly in the PR1 to PR7, & PR25 / 26 postcode areas
of Preston (UK). We have around 300 members, and are
active in all areas of cat welfare - rescuing, rehoming,
and fostering cats, maintaining a lost and found cats
register, and trapping and neutering feral cats. We
also have a junior section of about 50 children - "The
Kitten Crew".
In 2003, the Preston Branch helped over fifteen hundred
cats, most of them needed veterinary attention of some
kind. The vast majority of these cats were neutered
by us. We homed 202 cats over the course of the year,
and reunited fifteen lost cats with their owners - on
this note, please microchip
your cats, it makes it so much easier for rescue groups
to get them back to you.
All our work is undertaken by volunteers, who do not
receive any financial reward, but enjoy the teamwork,
and the reward of knowing that they have helped to feed,
home, or treat an abandoned or abused animal.
We have fundraising meetings every month at the
Black Bull, Liverpool Road,
Longton. They are held at 8 p.m. on the first Tuesday
of the month, with the exception of December.
We have a lost and found cats register, whereby we
try to reunite strays with their owners. Please email
us us if you have lost or
found a cat in the Preston
area. We advise all cat owners to get their cats and
kittens microchipped, and to keep the PetLog
service informed of any change of address. We have a
microchip scanner, and if your cat is 'chipped' we will
be able to re-unite you quickly. We microchip every
cat that we rehome.
Our award winning mobile neutering unit has now been
sent to Wigan Branch, to tackle the problem of cat overpopulation
in that area. Sadly, we couldn't afford the cost of
running a vehicle specifically to tow the unit, and
we didn't have enough volunteers to tow the unit to
go out often enough to make the costs worthwhile. Thanks
to everyone who supported the project. We are still
doing a phenomenal amount of neutering though, both
via the voucher scheme, and by working with feral colonies.
We have new members joining us all the time, and it's
amazing how much more we can do, and how much confidence
it gives the more established volunteers. All our new
members are very much appreciated.
If you would like more information about any of the
issues raised here, please email
us.
