Despite the fact that Preston Branch is one of the UK's top Branches for neutering, due mostly to the heroic efforts of Val Chew, there are still many unwanted and uncared for kittens out there. The overabundance of cats is a contributary factor in cruelty. If there were fewer cats, they would be more valuable, and people would treat them better.
Neutering is the most vital aspect of cat welfare work.
A neutered cat is less likely to stray, less likely
to fight, less likely to be injured, and above all,
cannot contribute to the appallingly high number of
unwanted cats and kittens that Branches deal with every
day. It is a myth that cats should be allowed to have
one litter. It does a female cat no harm at all to be
spayed before her first season, and we recommend that
all cats that are not required for breeding be spayed
at the age of 5 - 6 months.
We can help with the cost of neutering, please email
us or call us on 01772 436885 for details of our neutering
voucher scheme. We can also give advice and help on
neutering colonies of feral cats.
If you live outside the area covered by our branch,
please contact our HQ on 08702 099099 during normal
office hours, Monday to Friday, or check out www.cats.org.uk
for details of your local branch.
Our mobile neutering unit was the first in the country,
and served the area well. Unfortunately we couldn't
find enough volunteers to tow the vehicle out every
week, so it is now on loan to the Wigan and Atherton
Branch, who are making excellent use of it. If you live
in the Wigan / Bolton / Chorley area, contact them on
01942 888693 for details of when it will next be in
your area.
